The Saugus River Watershed Council is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 to protect and restore the natural resources of the watershed. We are pleased offer the following two $500 scholarships during the spring of 2018.
- Pam Harris Memorial Scholarship – $500
- SRWC Environmental Leadership Scholarship – $500
These scholarships will recognize and support graduating high school seniors who have demonstrated environmental leadership and plan to continue in the environmental field through course of study in college or as volunteers. Students submitting this one application will automatically be considered as candidates for both scholarships.
Eligibility
- Applicants must be graduating from high school during the spring of 2019 and live in one of the following eleven communities that are part of the Saugus River watershed: Saugus, Lynn, Lynnfield, Wakefield, Reading, Revere, Everett, Malden, Melrose, Peabody, and Stoneham.
- Applicants must be able to demonstrate their personal commitment to protecting the environment. Examples include volunteer work associated with environmental conservation, part-time jobs working to protect the environment, academic achievement, and / or selecting a college course of study in the environmental field. Please Note: applicants demonstrating commitment to public health aspects of environmental protection will receive preference for the Pam Harris Memorial Scholarship. As a nurse, volunteer member of the Board of Health, and SRWC Board Member – Pam was committed to improving public health for families in the Saugus River watershed by addressing the most troubling sources of pollution.
- Students must be accepted for college admission beginning September 2019.
- Deadline: Applications must be emailed by Friday, April 12, 2019 to marylester@saugusriver.org. Transcripts may be scanned in and included with application or emailed separately from Guidance Counselors.
- Saugus River Watershed Council staff, contractors, board members or members of their immediate families are not eligible to apply.
Selection & Awards
Recipient will be selected based upon commitment to environmental protection, academic record, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, statement of personal commitment and goals related to protecting the environment. Financial need may be considered on a secondary basis among selected finalists. Two scholarships of $500 each will be awarded during 2018. Funds may be used for college tuition, books or fees.
