Since Mrs. Phillips awarded the first scholarships in 1991, over $64 million in awards has been given to more than 4,100 students who attended colleges all across the country. In 2019, the Phillips Scholarship Fund awarded 160 new scholarships ranging from $3,000 to $17,000 annually. This year, the Phillips Scholarship Fund has awarded over $3 million to students to assist them with their college bills., . Every year, at least one Lynn English student has received this scholarship.
Prospective applicants must be permanent residents of New England but may attend college anywhere in the United States. High school seniors entering college and returning college students attending accredited U.S. colleges or universities full-time are eligible to apply for the scholarship. Awards are limited to students in undergraduate study and to those seeking their first bachelor’s degree.
For many students, knowing that they have received scholarships can greatly influence their choice of college. As a result, in addition to its regular application process, Phillips now offers an optional early application for students whose college choice would be impacted by whether or not they receive the Phillips Scholarship. Students interested in being notified of a decision before the May 1st reply date need to have their scholarship application materials in order to submit an early application by April 3rd. Early applicants will receive a decision from the Phillips Office regarding their award before the common reply date of May 1st.The first 300 applications received by 12:00 noon on April 3, 2020 will be considered. Applicants must submit a completed New Application for High School Students, including financial aid information from the college they plan to attend and all other required materials. Students will be notified of one of the following decisions: awarded a scholarship, deferred to the regular application pool, or not awarded a scholarship for this year.
Any high school applicant who submits the New High School Application by 12:00 noon on April 3, but after the 300 quota has been reached, will automatically be deferred to the regular application process. These applicants will be notified by email shortly after the April 3 deadline to let them know that their application will be considered with all applications submitted by the May 1 deadline. Deferred applicants will also receive an email notification in mid-June notifying them of a final decision.
Tips for Applicants:
- Applicants should check the financial eligibility calculator on the website before applying for the scholarship.
- Students should highlight their service to others. This can be through community service or responsibilities at home, at their workplace or within their school community.
- The scholarship committee highly values part-time employment; it is rare that a student with no work history is awarded a scholarship.
