La Vida Scholars – Lynn

The below message is from La Vida Scholars – Lynn:

Our La Vida Scholars ended 2020 on a high note with over 50 early acceptances including American University, College of the Holy Cross, Boston University, Posse at Centre College, and Harvard University!  And last fall 100% of our Scholars headed off for college at some pretty amazing institutions and earned some of the most competitive scholarships in the country (Gates, Posse, Dell, Yawkey, Questbridge). Almost half of our 45 Scholars are attending college debt-free!

Next month we launch our free SAT Prep program and yet we are still looking to fill 10 final spots in our Class of 2022.

What we offer:

  • Weekly college seminars on college process, financial aid, interview prep, essay development and review
  • Free SAT Prep, for 10 weeks, with small class sizes
  • One-on-one advising with college applications
  • Career exploration events with local businesses and companies
  • Monthly Family workshops and events
  • A match of up to $1000 in college savings
  • college trips* and private info meetings with college representatives
  • and a free Macbook laptop as they head off for college

In spite of the pandemic, last year our Scholars visited 8 college campuses and then had 20 remote meet-n-greets with colleges such as Villanova, Lehigh University, and American University. We are busy reimagining what college trips can look like and how/who we will connect our future college students to.

Family Engagement:

What sets us apart from many organizations is our level of support for our families. We host monthly family workshops where families learn about the college process and how to participate as well as support their child, offered in both English and Spanish. This past year, in the response to the pandemic we reached out to our families to see how we could support and created a resource guide as well as provided over $5,000 in direct financial assistance.

Next Steps:

La Vida Scholars does not discriminate based on immigration or citizenship status- everyone is welcome! All students are eligible to apply regardless of whether they are undocumented, TPS, DACA, or DREAMers. Since 2007, La Vida has helped over 200 students go to college and secure over $18 million in grants, scholarships, and awards!
