DUE DATE: April 15, 2021

To qualify, a student will have a parent(s)/guardians(s) that is dealing or dealt with mental health illness or drug addiction. We will select five LPS students for the $2,000.00 scholarships at the end of the 10th grade, and provide support and mentoring through the 11th and 12th grade. The $2,000.00 can be used towards higher education or career advancement programs. Students must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 2.0 and provide three letters of recommendation from LPS educators/social workers/guidance counselors.

Brenda passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2020. Brenda was surrounded by her loving family as her 2 year battle with lung cancer ended. Brenda was brought up by her grandmother and went through foster care most of her childhood. Brenda suffered from mental health illnesses and after the death of her partner in 1990, she also dealt with drug addiction. After an arrest in 1999, Brenda went through Lynn District Court’s Drug Court and was entered into the Project Cope rehab program. Brenda successfully completed the program in 2002. Brenda managed her mental health illnesses with the help of the Lynn Community Health Center and her family.

Brenda was able to support and push for her children to reach their goals. Students interested in applying for the scholarship should write responses to the two following questions (at least 400 words each), provide an unofficial high school transcript, letters of recommendation and demonstrate financial need (a letter will suffice).

What are your goals for the next five years and how can this scholarship/mentorship help in you achieving those goals?

What has been your biggest challenge in life and what steps did you take to overcome that challenge?

The two essay responses, the high school transcript, the three letters of recommendation, and the letter about demonstrated financial need should be sent in ONE email to BrendaAnnBealMSFInc@gmail.com.
