Merrimack College – James W. O’Brien Foundation

FOR SENIORS

In honor of the relationship between Merrimack College and the community of Lynn, two high school seniors will be awarded a James W. O’Brien Scholarship. These scholarships – valued at over $60,000 annually – are funded through the James W. O’Brien Foundation. They cover full tuition, room and board, comprehensive fees, and include a stipend for textbooks.

Merrimack’s James W. O’Brien Scholarship Committee seeks students who are leaders both in high school and in the community of Lynn. O’Brien Scholars possess academic drive, career-focus, and are excited by the strong personalization and supportive community that Merrimack is so well known for. Eligibility also includes:

  • Applying for admission to Merrimack College By February 15, 2022
  • United States citizenship or permanent resident status
  • FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) submission by February 15, 2022
  • Currently enrolled at Lynn English or St. Mary’s High School in Lynn, Massachusetts
  • Living on-campus during the academic year

Students chosen for consideration will be asked to interview—either virtually or in person to be determined at a later date—with 1-2 committees composed of members of the Merrimack community. Interviews will last 30 minutes, and all candidates who apply by the deadline will automatically be given an interview time slot.

O’Brien Scholarships are renewable for up to eight undergraduate semesters. Students should remain in good standing as defined by the Merrimack College catalog and institutional standards for personal conduct. O’Brien Scholars are required to annually file the FAFSA to retain their scholarship.

O’Brien Scholars at Merrimack

Beyond the countless opportunities available to all Merrimack students, O’Brien Scholars have additional academic and social support, specifically with transitioning to campus life. Recipients are paired with an Academic Success coach prior to their freshman year who serves as a resource throughout all four years at Merrimack, as well as a Career Advisor to provide guidance and mentorship for success after college. They will also have access to service opportunities in the community through Hands to Help.
