Avis Peters Scholarship

FOR SENIORS

The North Shore branch of the NAACP is excited to announce the 2026 application process for the Avis Peters Scholarship. The Avis Peters Scholarship was established in honor of Ms. Peters, a supporter of the NAACP. Our branch awards one $2,500 scholarship to a graduating senior (any major/area of study), who has been accepted to a four-year institution, who exhibits leadership skills and embodies the ideals of the NAACP, and who is active in his/her school and community.

Eligible students are:

  • Graduating high-school seniors in spring/summer 2026
  • Maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or higher (or equivalent)
  • Living in the North Shore MA region
  • A member of the Black, African-American, or African diaspora

The scholarship can be applied toward covering the cost of tuition, fees, and books. To apply, submit a completed application form with responses to two very short essay questions, plus a letter of recommendation from an adult at school and a transcript. The full application form can be found here. The deadline for applications is April 15, 2026. We expect to notify applicants of our decision in May, and we will make an award at the NAACP branch’s June 17 meeting, including a celebration of our scholarship recipient. A flyer with this information is also attached.

Applications will be reviewed in connection to the mission and vision of the NAACP.

  • The NAACP Mission: “Our mission is to achieve equity, political rights,
  •  and social inclusion by advancing policies and practices that expand human and civil rights, eliminate discrimination, and accelerate the well-being, education, and economic security of Black people and all persons of color.”
  • The NAACP Vision: “We envision an inclusive community rooted in liberation
  •  where all persons can exercise their civil and human rights without discrimination.”

Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria will also receive a year’s membership to the North Shore branch of the NAACP. Please share this widely with eligible students and adults who work with graduating seniors. If you have any questions, please reach out to the branch education committee (education@northshorenaacp.org).
