Contest Topic

Describe and analyze an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official who served during or after 1917, the year John F. Kennedy was born. Include an analysis of the obstacles, risks, and consequences associated with the act. The essay may concern an issue at the local, state, national, or international level.

Contest Deadline

The Profile in Courage Essay Contest is open to submissions. The contest deadline is January 12, 2026.

Recognition and Awards

First-place: $10,000          Second-place: $3,000          Three Finalists: $1,000 each

Fifteen students receive honorable mentions.

The top five winners and the students that receive honorable mentions also receive a hardcover copy of Profiles in Courage.

All participants receive a Certificate of Participation.

Massachusetts AFL-CIO Scholarship Awards Program

We are pleased to announce the Annual Massachusetts AFL-CIO Scholarship Awards Program. All graduating seniors in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts who are seeking a college degree or job training are eligible to compete. Scholarship awards this year total over half a million dollars. To qualify, students must be a senior in high school, fill out the online application and then take the exam. Applicants must register in advance at www.massaflcio.org/scholarships. Applications will be accepted through Friday, December 19, 2025. The deadline is firm, and no late registrations will be accepted. The exam consists of 30 multiple choice questions and one written essay. All questions will be selected from the information in the study guide. All study resources, including the study guide, flash cards and quizzes are available by visiting www.learnlaborhistory.com.

This scholarship program provides financial assistance awards annually to graduating high school students who live in Lynn and have been accepted to an accredited institution of higher education or accredited vocational training program.

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of several criteria which include: financial need, perseverance in the face of hardship or personal challenges, demonstrated scholastic performances, character, community service, and extracurricular activities. Awards are made without consideration of race, creed, national origin, or gender except where such consideration might be relevant to examples of hardship or overcoming unusual circumstances.

The application must be completed and postmarked by Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

Point Foundation offers scholarships for LGBTQ+ and ally students attending accredited colleges and universities in the U.S. Point scholarships support community college, undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. 

Flagship Scholarship recipients receive financial support, access to leadership development programs, and the support of a community of scholars and alumni. 

Amount: Financial award based on need, renewable for up to four years of support.

Funding Period: Awarded Scholars will start their scholarship in the fall 2026 term, with a maximum of four years of support.

Burger King Scholarship Foundation

Through the BK℠ Scholars program, we’ve awarded nearly $64 million to over 55,000 deserving students across North America. Our goal is to grant one scholarship for every BK® restaurant — that’s more than $7 million each year!

Scholarships range from $1,000 to $60,000 and are intended to offset the cost of attending college or post-secondary vocational/technical school. Recipients are selected through an application process that takes into consideration their grade point average (GPA), work experience, extracurricular activities, community service, and financial need. In 2025 alone, the Foundation awarded over $4.4 million in scholarships to over 4,000 students.

Applicants must-

  • Be living in the United States, Puerto Rico, Guam or Canada
  • Have a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent
